A friend has been unemployed for 3 months. He had an interview yesterday and both his cars broke down with no money to repair them. He ran out of money. He is a single man with no dependents, around 30, has a good degree, worked for most of it and has had decent salaries. I told him he should have at least 6 months worth of money saved up, if not 12. Save enough money so that you can last at least 6 months of unemployment. Ideally, 12. I know it is hard for many people if you don't earn enough.
